If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re on a white sandy beach, sand between your toes, and cool blue waters rolling in, but can’t make the trip to Hawai’i, why not settle for this delicious frozen co*cktail.
Bright fiery red base with a creamy white top poured in a tall collins glass makes this frozen co*cktail both a visual and tasty treat.
The lava flow is a popular drink here in Hawai’i and while not truly a Hawaiian recipe, it has definitely become a mainstay in local bars and restaurants.

What’s in a lava flow drink?
- Strawberries. Frozen is best as it gives it a smoothie like consistency.
- Light rum. You can use any brand you’d like here.
- Coconut rum. You can also use any brand here. The coconut flavor gives it a tropical kick.
- Banana. Be sure to use a ripe banana here. The riper the banana, the sweeter it is.
- Cream of coconut. Not to be confused with coconut cream. You can find this in your local grocery store. It’s a sweet cream made from the coconut meat and has a thick syrup consistency.
- Pineapple juice. Canned or fresh works here.
- Ice. You can’t have a blended drink without some ice right?
Garnishes
- Fresh slice of pineapple
- co*cktail umbrella

Why is it called a lava flow?
The pineapple, banana, and coconut mixture gets poured over a boozy strawberry base creating what looks like lava flowing. This look is what gives this frozen co*cktail its name.
How do you make a virgin lava flow?
Got kids or non-drinkers around? Not to worry. This co*cktail can easily be made virgin (no alcohol). Simply replace the alcohol with milk. Now you’ve got a delicious lava flow smoothie.

Can you make this frozen co*cktail ahead of time?
Since this drink is made with frozen ingredients it is best to make at the time of serving. It will not hold up well in the refrigerator or freezer if made ahead of time.
What type of glass should I serve it in?
Classic lava flows are served in a hurricane or collins glass, however you can use any glass you’d like here.
