Is OfficeMax the same as Office Depot? ›

OfficeMax is an American office supplies retailer founded in 1988. As an independent chain, it was the third-largest office supply retailer in the United States. Following a 2013 merger, it is currently a brand and subsidiary of Office Depot.

In 2020, the retail chain announced its plans to close or consolidate a number of stores and to cut 13,100 jobs by the end of 2023. From the beginning of 2020 to January 2023, 327 locations nationwide were shuttered, per company reports.

In May 2014, Office Depot announced the closure of four hundred stores, due to declining sales and customer migration to e-retailers. On February 4, 2015, it was announced that rival Staples had agreed to purchase Office Depot, in a cash and stock deal worth approximately $6.3 billion.
